The Creative Multimedia Department of Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) is organizing a Comic Design Competition. In this competition, teams or individuals will have to pitch and propose by illustrating a short comic (3 to 8 pages) and submit background information of its story revolving around the theme within a Malaysian Context.

OBJECTIVE:

To use this as a showcase of Malaysia talent in the content creation industries that can be showcased or marketed globally.
The competition will be an avenue to encourage and explore talents in Malaysia to turn their greater ideas and stories into reality.

Ten winners will be awarded RM15,000 grant each, to support their comic illustration and digitising production of their complete full comic series, mini series or graphic novel from their proposal.

Submissions will be opened until 8th of December 2006.

OVERVIEW
1. The Digital Comic has to be in English.
- If your comic is in other that of the English language, please include an English translation as an attachment.

- Please fill in the form and write the proposal in English. The Competition theme is ‘within a Malaysian Context’.

- Your comic have to showcase Malaysia’s unique identity in any part of the design, story, content and etc, based on your creativity.

- We are not looking for any specific genre or type of comic book but content has to be in within a Malaysian context.

- We are looking for comics that are well written and well drawn, by people who are dedicated and can meet deadlines.

2. Table of Content
List down the content title and the page number.

3. Cover Letter
A letter that briefly introduce yourself and your intention to participate in this
event.

COMIC PROPOSAL DETAILS
4. Please write one (1) page proposal on,
- Genre of your comic, what kind of comic you plan to publish. Is it a graphic novel, Comic series or etc.

- Tell us how you are going to spend the grant to help you in your comic creation.

- Please allocate an amount to digitize the comic. It is part of the requirement.

- Please indicate the timeline of your project and the dateline of your final submission.

SYNOPSIS OF THE STORY
5. Please include one (1) page of synopsis
- The overall story. We do not want a single-issue synopsis - we want a synopsis of the entire series or story arc. As concisely and as succinctly as you are able.

- Please avoid hyperbole -- avoid questions as plot points. We are not the audience. Explain why we would be interested in this series. Keep it Short!

CHARACTER INTRODUCTION AND DESIGN
6. Send your main characters sketches and or bios. Brief explanation will do.

UNIQUE SELLING POINTS
7. You can tell us whether you see it as a full color or a black and white book, a
mini or on-going series, a Prestige book or an Original Graphic Novel.
- Tell us what sets it apart from other comics and who the target
audience is.

- What is the unique selling point?

  ARTWORK
8. Comic Poster
Include (1) or maximum of (2) cover mock-up
- this is to show that you understand the market and your design sense.

- You may create a logo can be easily read and be clear. This cover mock-up also will use as poster to promote your comics.

9. Comic Strip
Send a copy of:
- Fully inked and lettered pages A3 (11inch x 15 inch) of sequential art.

- Please submit A3 size in softcopy (.tif / .psd / .ai / .tga )

- Please submit A4 size in print out copy.

- Include quiet scenes as well as action,

- Utilize a wide variety of faces, figures (male, female, normal people as well as "super" characters, etc.), and well-realized settings.

- Do not send original art.

- Send at least 3 pages that are fully inked and lettered finished pages, 8 pages is the maximum.

- The important thing here is that we can see that you know what you're doing, that you understand where to place copy and how to tell a story.

- This can be coloured of Black and White.
b. Copy in Digital Format, CMYK (300dpi) in CD or DVD.
c. Copy in Full Printed Format (Colour or B/W) clean and sharp and easy to
"read." Write your name behind the copy.

HINT ON YOUR ARTWORK
a. Does the angle you've chosen take full advantage of the dramatic
potential in a scene?

b. Do the backgrounds establish where the characters are in relationship to
their surroundings and to each other?

c. Is there a well-defined foreground, middleground, and background?

d. Is there a clear, readable story even without word balloons or captions?

e. Have you left adequate room for the dialogue and captions?

10. A declaration certifying that the project presented
Please insert a letter of declaration that your work is not part of school
syllabus, has not been grant aided or purchased by any publisher. Finally, we own no intellectual properties, you can be assured, accepted that your property will remain yours. We will only have the rights to showcase and promote your works.

11. Please remember to submit and fill in the application form.

12. Please send us a CD or DVD with include all the document and
Digitized/Scanned artwork. The format for artwork must be 300dpi CMYK and
format in .tiff .ai .eps .psd or .tga.
