The Creative Multimedia Department of Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) is organizing a Comic Design Competition. In this competition, teams or individuals will have to pitch and propose by illustrating a short comic (3 to 8 pages) and submit background information of its story revolving around the theme within a Malaysian Context.

OBJECTIVE:

To use this as a showcase of Malaysia talent in the content creation industries that can be showcased or marketed globally.
The competition will be an avenue to encourage and explore talents in Malaysia to turn their greater ideas and stories into reality.

Ten winners will be awarded RM15,000 grant each, to support their comic illustration and digitising production of their complete full comic series, mini series or graphic novel from their proposal.

Submissions will be opened until 8th of December 2006.

1. HOW DO I REGISTER?
The competition is opened to Malaysian companies and individuals 18 years old and above. One entry per team / individual.

The Competition theme is ‘within a Malaysian Context’. You can creatively create your comic but be sure there is element of design, story, content of Malaysia inside of it to showcase our Malaysia unique identity.

2. FORMAT OF THE PROPOSAL:

Synopsis of the story
Character introduction and design
Unique selling points

A declaration letter certifying that the project presented
Has not been otherwise grant aided
Has not been pre-purchased by any developers, publishers.
Is not part of a school project
 

3. REQUIREMENT:

i.

Proposal must be in A4, portrait format, please submit :-
•  A soft copy of the proposal (in .doc format)
•  A printed copy of the proposal


* (Failure to comply with any of the above requirements will result in automatic disqualification.)

  4. IP RIGHTS

Violation of copyright is prohibited. The company or individuals hereby declare and represent to MDC that the work is original and that no part and portion of the work is an infringement or violation of any IP or any propriety rights of any third party. Failure to do so will result in automatic disqualification.

The IP Rights in the works shall vest with the company / individuals. MDeC reserved the rights to use the comics for promotion.

5. JUDGING PROCESS

A panel of 5 judges from the industry, to be selected by MDeC including representative from MDeC, will review all submission received. After the closing date, the panel will choose 20 best submitted entries to go for the pitching presentation.

10 winners will be chosen and automatically eligible for the grant.
During the presentation pitching, each company / individual will be given 5 minutes to pitch their ideas and story. Presentation aid and styles are open to creativity of each company.

6. MONITORING PROCESS

The winners will sign an agreement with MDeC. This is to ensure that the parties (MDeC and grant receiver) agree with the requirements of this project; completion of proposed comic by end of year 2006 or early 2007 with the usage of CADC facilities as in their production.

A monthly progress report will be submitted to MDeC, to assist the winners to go to the next level such as completion their comics.

7. CONTEST ENTRIES WILL BE JUDGED BASED ON THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:

i. The Story of the comic (Overall storyline flow)
ii. Design works (Does the design of the character and environment unique and interesting?)
iii. Art Composition (The art composition to bring out the comic story?)
iv. Originality of the idea (Is the idea innovative and story interesting / unique?)
v. Appeal of the idea for commercialization (Does the idea attractive / entertaining for international market?)

8. AWARDS
